Terracotta Roof Tiles

TERRACOTTA ROOF TILES

Terracotta roof tiles are different to Concrete tiles and should be treated differently. Terracotta roof tiles do not have an acrylic paint coating like concrete roof tiles so do not need to be painted. Terracotta tiles are prone to moss buildup because of the porous surface. This can be treated with a high pressure water clean and an application of a sealer. The sealer penetrates the tile and prevents water absorbency and leaks. It also slows the regrowth of organic material by preventing water being absorbed into the tiles.

Terracotta tiled roofs also require maintenance to the bedding and pointing on the ridge caps and broken tiles replaced.

WHY SHOULD A SEALER COAT BE APPLIED?

  • To enhance the visual appeal of your roof
  • To show you care for your biggest investment
  • To ensure your roof remains in top condition and is water tight
  • To extend the life of the tiles.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GLAZE AND A SEALER?

  • A sealer will penetrate the tile surface to protect the tile but not put an artificial gloss on the surface.
  • A glaze is susceptible to moisture affecting the coating during application. If moisture affects the coating the finish will appear cloudy.

My roof is only 10 years old does it REQUIRE MAINTENANCE?

  • A 10 year old roof may not require significant work. As part of a routine maintenance program for your house your tile roof should be inspected regularly. After 10 years the pointing may need renewing and you may have a few tiles that have cracked due to storm damage.
